EQ Therapy

What Is EQ Therapy?

EQ stands for Emotional Quotient; alternatively we could call it EI standing for Emotional Intelligence.

EQ Developmental Therapy is about developing our Emotional Quotient.  It is often believed that our IQ is what we are born with and not something we can necessarily increase.  Whether there is truth in this or not, it is true to say that our EQ-emotional quotient can be developed throughout our lives and will enhance and enrich our lives.  People with a high IQ will not function as well if they do not have a good EQ.  A good EQ is more fundamental and essential to a happy life than IQ.

What is emotional intelligence?
The concept of emotional intelligence was  popularized in 1995 after the publication of psychologist and New York Times science writer Daniel Goleman’s book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.
Psychologists Peter Salovey and John D Mayer, leading researchers on emotional intelligence, defined it as: “the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions” (Emotional Intelligence, 1990).

Salovey and Mayer identified four different factors of emotional intelligence: the perception of emotion, the ability to reason using emotions, the ability to understand emotion and the ability to manage emotions.

EQ Development Therapy, through the medium of bodywork, is a holistic therapy which focuses on dealing with past emotions trapped in our bodies and thereby assisting us to act appropriately when new current emotions arise.
Trapped emotions in our bodies can magnify current feelings, so that our reactions are much stronger than we would like or intend them to be. This happens because past emotions are brought into play, often without any awareness. Releasing trapped emotions not only reduces the impact of current emotions but also enhances the more positive emotions that we may prefer to express.

How is EQ Bodywork effective?

When any part of the body hurts, the body clamps around the pain to protect it.  Known as Auto-Contractile Pain Reflex  (ACPR).  The same thing is true of emotional pain. People say  ‘I feel I have been kicked in the stomach’ when something hurtful is said or happens. The body does not distinguish between physical and emotional pain and so the body clamps around the painful feelings we experience.  These feelings can remain locked in our bodies for a very long time.  Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt Therapy, says ‘Emotions are born, have a life, then die’. The emotions trapped in us are still alive and affect our everyday life.  In EQ Bodywork Therapy we work to unlock the clamping so that the emotion can blossom and dissipate thus allowing our EQ to develop, enhancing our lives.

It is through a process of relaxation that we work with clients, as it is feeling the emotion that enables its release, rather than the expression of the emotion.  Expression can be used to defuse an emotion at a given time and thus be very helpful but normally it is a temporary diffusion and it will not dissipate but will return again in a similar situation.

Many of us carry emotional wounds and traumas from recent days or from as far back as early childhood.  Through EQ development therapy we can learn to overcome these pains freeing us to move forward in our lives intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.

EQ development therapy brings us a better understanding of emotions and how they affect us in our everyday life.  It facilitates us to work with them through integrative emotional therapy, especially bodywork.
